With so many hybrid mattresses now on the market, navigating between brands and designs can feel like a numbers game as you try and weigh up the price to the number of springs. But what takes a mattress from being good to being one of the best mattresses, is a clear drive to innovate, something that puts Otty's designs right up there with the likes of our favourite Simbas.

When it comes to the Otty Pure+, it's the addition of Bamboo and Charcoal that makes this mattress stand out. Of course, this is paired with seven layers and a total of 28cm of sweet memory foam and pocket springs to make sure you're sleeping peacefully. After having slept on it ourselves, there's no denying it's got that balance between comfort and support, a dreamy achievement for all sleeping styles. But at nearly £1,500 for a double when at full price, it's worth weighing up the cost.

We've already briefly alluded to the standout feature of this mattress (can you blame us for being excited?) but what sets the Otty Pure+ apart from other bed-in-a-box mattresses on the market is the fact that it’s the UK’s first bamboo and charcoal-infused memory foam hybrid design. These sustainable materials are known for their health benefits as bamboo is breathable, moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating, while activated charcoal eliminates odours and is hypoallergenic. This basically means it works to keep it hygienic and clean so it’s beneficial for anyone who suffers from allergies. Small perforations through the mattress further help air to circulate around the mattress, and we found this combination kept us at an optimum temperature throughout the night – even when summer room temperatures rose. Keeping things breathable is key with any kind of hybrid mattress, especially when you're working with seven layers, so this extra bit of detail makes a surprising difference.

Fun innovations aside, the real test ultimately comes down to whether or not the mattress is any good to sleep on. We’ve tried a wide range of medium-firm mattresses over the years and were instantly taken with how relaxing the Otty Pure+ Hybrid Bamboo and Charcoal Premium mattress feels. On a scale of “super-soft one”, to a “waaay-too-hard-for-our-liking ten”, Otty rates this mattress as a reassuringly comfortable 5.5, which provides a well-balanced medium-firm firmness. We found the mattress felt supportive in a range of sleep positions.

At 28cm high, it’s also thicker than most standard hybrid mattresses that average around the 25cm mark. It’s made up of seven layers, with two separate spring layers and heat-regulating memory foam inside. This creates a design that feels supportive, yet still has a nice bit of bounce.

We found that the mix of memory foam and 4000 encapsulated pocket springs provided good pressure relief - particularly around the hips and lumbar area, with our spines feeling well aligned and at ease when laying on our back. Edge support is reasonable on this design too, which meant we could sit comfortably on the side while getting up in the morning.

The only real downside worth mentioning is that there’s a lot of packaging to contend with. But thankfully, it’s easily recyclable. For more peace of mind, the Otty foam is CertiPUR and Europur approved, which means the quality and toxicity of the foam inside the mattress has been tested to pass the highest standards set by the governing body. And while we noticed a bit of off-gassing when we opened up the mattress from the vacuum-packed plastic packaging – which is that new factory smell you sometimes get with a new mattress – we found that this cleared within a few days.

While the Otty is certainly up there with the pricier mattresses on the market, this design feels so hard to find flaws with (something we normally don't struggle with too much), that we think it's deserving of its place among that elite, luxury group. The bamboo and the charcoal actually felt like they made a difference, rather than being just for show, and most importantly, we managed to lay our heads down and achieve a restful slumber with ease. We'd say that's reason enough to get it on your shortlist.

Currently, at 45 per cent off, it's also not too different from the kind of price you'd be looking to pay for a premium Simba or Emma mattress. Oh, and let's not forget the fact you have a 100-night trial at your disposal, taking away any fear of commitment and giving you the chance to try it for yourself before you make up your mind for good. For us at least, it’s a keeper.
